“At first, I did not want to join. I was scared of the unknown, as any fourteen-year-old would be,”
Emaya W. is a proud member of Troop 606, whose journey in Scouting is a powerful reminder of how this program shapes young lives. Like many teenagers, Emaya was initially hesitant to join Scouts. When her mother suggested she join a girls’ troop in Scouts BSA, her first reaction was fear of the unknown—something any 14-year-old could relate to. “At first, I did not want to join. I was scared of the unknown, as any fourteen-year-old would be,” Emaya recalls
However, after some thought, she made a deal with her mom: she would give it a year, and if she enjoyed it, she’d continue. That decision changed her life.
Growth Through Scouting
Over the years, Emaya discovered the true value of the Scouting experience. She learned countless lessons that shaped her into the person she is today. From mastering basic camping and first-aid skills to understanding how to work with people from different backgrounds, Scouting helped Emaya grow into a well-rounded individual. “I’ve made deep connections with others, learned how to adequately plan events, and discovered that there’s always a solution to a problem,” she explains.

These challenges have given her the resilience to face obstacles head-on, whether it’s dealing with an unexpected camping mishap or planning for summer camp.
Beyond the practical skills, Emaya has also internalized the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Traits like trustworthiness, kindness, and helpfulness have guided her both in Scouting and in life. “I’ve learned that being trustworthy, kind, and helpful are valuable to succeed in life,” she says. These principles, along with staying mentally awake and morally straight, have become her compass for navigating life’s challenges.
Her mother has also noticed the positive changes in Emaya since she joined Scouts.
“Since joining the Scouts, I’ve noticed that my child has become significantly more focused, organized, and determined in setting and pursuing her goals. Her confidence has grown tremendously, and she has developed stronger leadership skills through taking leadership roles in her troop, learning how to use the patrol method, attending Summer Camp, and other Scouting activities.”
Leadership and Teamwork in Action
One of the most transformative aspects of Emaya’s Scouting experience has been the lessons she’s learned in leadership and teamwork. “Being a Scout has shown me the importance of leadership and teamwork,” Emaya explains.

Through her involvement in troop activities and leadership positions, she’s seen firsthand how much can be accomplished when people work together. As a leader, she’s learned to inspire and motivate others, uniting her team to achieve common goals.
Her participation in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) stands out as a key moment in her journey. Though initially apprehensive about attending without knowing anyone in her patrol, Emaya returned from NYLT brimming with confidence and newfound leadership skills. Her mother proudly reflects,
“One of the most memorable moments of pride was when my child attended NYLT. Initially, she was apprehensive about going, but she returned beaming with joy, having discovered undeniable leadership skills and a newfound eagerness to teach her troop.”
