About the Silver Beaver

The Silver Beaver Award was established in 1931 by National President Mortimer L. Schiff to recognize Scouters who provide distinguished service to youth at the local level. The Silver Beaver is an award of the National Council upon recommendation of the local council.

The first Silver Beaver Awards were issued on a blue and white pocket ribbon, but due to the heavy weight of the medallion, the award was changed to a medallion suspended from a neck ribbon in 1932. Initially, the Silver Beaver Award was only presented to men, while a similar award called the Silver Fawn was presented to women.

The requirements for a Silver Beaver were revised in 1974 to reflect changes in the Scouting Program making both men and women eligible to receive the Silver Beaver. The award is the highest recognition bestowed by the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council for distinguished service by a Scouter.
