Welcome to Sea Scouting!

For over 100 years Sea Scouting has promoted better citizenship and improved members’ boating skills through instruction and practice in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social, service experiences, and knowledge of our maritime heritage.

You and your shipmates lead your Sea Scout program, so you make it what you want. In Sea Scouts you may cruise the San Juan Islands or SCUBA dive in the Florida Keys. You may be compete in the Koch International Sea Scout Cup alongside Scouts from around the world, or cruise aboard “America’s Tall Ship” the USCG Barque Eagle. In Sea Scouts, you build your own adventure!

Activities & Advancement

Sea Scout units– called ships- are established all across the country on oceans, bays, rivers, and lakes. They provide limitless opportunities and exciting challenges that you won’t find anywhere else. Sea Scouts is a place to grow and learn, find adventure, and build long lasting friendships.

Sea Scouts receive training in seamanship and leadership. From ship meetings, long cruises, a USCG sponsored Safety at Sea, to SEAL (Sea Scout Experience Advanced Leadership) training, you will be learning every step of the way whether you realize it or not.

Sea Scouts are recognized and rewarded for the things they learn and do. You can earn valuable certifications in SCUBA, boating safety, lifesaving, and CPR, as well as advance in rank from Apprentice to Quartermaster. Each certification and level of advancement marks your growth as a sailor and a leader.

How Can You Help?

The most important help that you, as a parent, can give your child is to work with them on their Sea Scouting requirements as they work toward their badge of rank. The Sea Scouting handbook is full of age-appropriate activities; some of them you do together at home. Ship meetings are designed for members to complete requirements that are required for them to earn their badge of rank.

Your role as a parent is the secret to a successful Sea Scouting program!

The patrol and Troop rely on parent participation to run a successful program. Sea Scouts operates through volunteer leadership. Volunteer leaders are an example of Scouting’s principle of service to others. By volunteering in Scouting, you are also giving your child or a youth and family the gift of your time. What could be more valuable? You will have an opportunity to be a positive influence in their life and in the lives of their friends. Here are some of the ways you could volunteer:

  • Skipper – Helps plan and carry out the Sea Scouting program with the help of the Ship committee. Assists the Boatswain (youth leader) run Ship meetings and attends the Ship committee meeting.
  • Ship Committee Member – Every parent or guardian is invited to become a member of the committee.  Ship committee members perform administrative functions of the Ship.
