As his term as Council President comes to a close, Benson Porter recently shared a heartfelt message from Camp Brorein—the same place where his first Scouting Beacon was recorded three years ago.

In his remarks, Benson reflected on what he described as an “incredible, action-packed” term of service. From the beginning, he emphasized his gratitude for the confidence placed in him by the Board of Directors and praised the more than 60 volunteer leaders who dedicate countless hours to guiding the council. He noted that the strength of the board and executive leadership helped drive bold decisions that positioned the council for long-term success.

Benson also highlighted the outstanding leadership of Scout Executive Mike Butler and the entire professional staff, along with the ranger teams who work tirelessly to maintain and improve council properties. Over the past three years, more than $2.5 million has been invested in camp improvements across the council, including significant upgrades at each of our camps. One of the most exciting milestones ahead is the planned groundbreaking of a new dining hall at Camp Brorein—designed to serve Scouts for generations to come.

A lifelong Scout himself, Benson spoke personally about the impact of the program on his own family, including his two sons, both Eagle Scouts. He reaffirmed that Scouting’s unique strength lies in the Scout Oath and Law and its unwavering focus on character development and leadership.

Throughout his presidency, Benson’s vision was clear: to lead boldly and lay the foundation for the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council to become the number one council in America. While acknowledging that such a goal extends beyond any single term, he expressed pride in the progress made and confidence in the path ahead.

As he concluded his service, Benson shared his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and his excitement for the future of Scouting in Tampa Bay. His leadership leaves a lasting legacy—one rooted in service, optimism, and an unwavering commitment to youth.
