In recognition of its decades of service to the community, the scouting units were recently honored with the Liberty Bell Award by the Hernando County Bar Association. The Liberty Bell Award is presented to individuals or organizations that promote civic responsibility, respect for the law, and community service. The award was presented by Lawyer Joseph M. Mason Jr to Chartered Organization Representative Ernest Lane.
For 105 years, Boy Scout Troop 71 has played an important role in shaping young leaders in Hernando County through service, character development, and community involvement. Founded in 1921, the Brooksville troop has guided generations of Scouts while building a lasting legacy of citizenship and leadership. Cub Scout Pack 71 has been in the community since 1989, leading the way for families with children kindergarten through 5th grade to learn the scouting mission. And Troop 71 for girls has been serving the community since 2022.
Throughout its long history, the scouting units have provided countless young men and women with opportunities to learn leadership, teamwork, and outdoor skills while encouraging service to others. Many former Scouts have gone on to serve in the military, become community leaders, and contribute to the growth of Hernando County.
The recognition from the Hernando County Bar Association highlights the troop’s enduring commitment to the values of Scouting and its positive impact on the Brooksville community for more than a century. As Troop 71 celebrates 105 years, its members and supporters continue to look toward the future while honoring a proud tradition of service and leadership.
