For many families, there’s a common belief about Scouting: if you didn’t start young, you’ve already missed your chance. John didn’t.
Recently featured by FOX 13 News and WFLA Tampa Bay, John began his journey at 13 years old. No Cub Scout background. No early start. In fact, his family wasn’t even planning on Scouting at all.
“At some point I had heard some negative things about scouting… my family originally decided scouting was something I was not going to do.”
John wasn’t looking for Scouting. He was looking for something different. After discovering a maritime-based youth program, he found his way to Sea Scouts, where his first experience wasn’t a meeting… it was getting out on the water.
“It was a great night where I went sailing with other scouts.”
That moment changed everything.
“Even though I accidentally joined Scouts, I’m so happy I did.”
Earning the Trifecta
What followed was years of commitment, leadership, and growth. John went on to earn what’s known as the Scouting trifecta:
- Eagle Scout (Scouts BSA)
- Sea Scout Quartermaster
- Venturing Summit Award
Each represents the highest rank in its program. Earning all three is rare. But what makes this story different isn’t just what he earned. It’s how late he started.
Through Scouting, John didn’t just earn ranks. He built a life filled with experiences most young people never get.
“I have been able to do some incredible things… sailed from Apollo Beach to Key West and back… became a lifeguard… got my Master Diver certification… did scientific diving in Antarctica.”
Camping. Climbing. Leadership. Service. And along the way, something bigger took shape.
“Scouting America is helping to prepare me to become a responsible, participating citizen and leader of high character.”
John’s story challenges a belief many families hold. That if you didn’t start early, it’s too late. It’s not.
“I have learned that Scouts is what you make it. It is your adventure.”
Whether a young person starts at 8 or 13, the opportunity is still there. To grow. To lead. To become something more.
