The Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes local leaders who are advocates and supporters of youth and their development. The Greater Tampa Bay Area Council hosts two annual events, the Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner in St. Petersburg in October and the Distinguished Citizen Award Luncheon in downtown Tampa in March.  The Dinner is a ticketed event that supports local scouting.  The Luncheon asks guests to make a pledge in support of local scouting.

The 2018 Distinguished Citizen Award Luncheon will honor Bob Buckhorn, Mayor of the City of Tampa.  Our guest speaker will be announced as soon as confirmation is received.

Bob Buckhorn is the 58th mayor of Tampa, the nation’s 53rd largest city and the 3rd largest in Florida, where he leads over 4,300 dedicated, hard-working, and forward-thinking civil servants.

On April 1, 2011 Bob Buckhorn was officially sworn into office and since then, he has led the city out of largest recession since the great depression. He has annually balanced the budget and has made strategic investments without raising property taxes.  Under his leadership the City of Tampa has seen twelve credit rating increases.

Buckhorn has made it a priority to focus on public safety, strong neighborhoods and economic growth while working diligently to improve the overall quality of life in our community.

Charlie Strong, the head coach of the University of South Florida football program, was our 2017 guest speaker.  His appointment makes Coach Strong the fourth head coach in USF football history. He was selected as the Big East Coach of the Year twice.  Strong was head coach at the University of Texas (2014-16), as well as the University of Louisville (2010-13).  .Established as a charismatic leader, strong recruiter and one of the best defensive minds in college football, we’re looking forward eagerly to the next USF football season.
